Signs of Gum Disease You Shouldn't Ignore

Signs of Gum Disease You Shouldn't Ignore

Gum disease if one of the most common dental conditions-and one of the most overlooked. The tricky part? It often starts quietly, with little to no pain. Many patients are surprised to learn they've had if for months (or even years) without realizing it.

At Honor Dental, we see this all the time. The good news is that when caught early, gum disease is very treatable. Knowing the warning signs can make all the difference.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria around the teeth. It typically starts as gingivitis (early stage) and can progress to periodontitis (advanced stage) if left untreated.

Bleeding Gums

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it's not something to brush off. Healthy gums should not bleed. This is often the first and most common sign of inflammation caused by bacteria buildup. Even occasional bleeding is worth paying attention to.

Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums

Gums should look firm and pale pink. If your appear:

  • Bright red
  • Puffy or swollen
  • Sensitive to touch

..it's a sign your body is reacting to irritation or infection.

Persistent Bad Breath

Bad breath that doesn't go away-even after brushing-can be caused by bacteria trapped under the gumline.

This type of bad breath (halitosis) is often linked to gum disease and shouldn't be ignored.

Receding Gums

Are your teeth starting to look longer than they used to?

Gum recession happens when the tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing more of the root. This can lead to sensitivity and is often a sign of progressing gum disease.

Loose or Shifting Teeth

As gum disease advances, it can begin to affect the bone that supports your teeth.

You may notice:

  • Teeth feeling loose
  • Changes in how your teeth fit together
  • Spaces developing between teeth

This is more advanced sign and should be evaluated right away.

Pain When Chewing

Discomfort or tenderness when biting or chewing can be a sign that the supporting structures around your teeth are compromised.

Even mild pain is worth checking out- don't wait for it to get worse.

Pus or Infection Around the Gums

This is one of the more serious signs. If you notice pus between your teeth and gums, it indicates an active infection that needs immediate attention.

Why Early Detection Matters

Gum disease doesn't just affect your mouth-if can impact your overall health. It has been linked to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and more due to chronic inflammation.

The earlier we catch it, the easier it is to treat-and in many cases, reverse.
